World Championship Draughts Composition PWCE III 2019 /2020

An endgame with comments. Een eindspel met commentaar.

The start of this Blog article gives an endgame as an example with the purpose of showing that it is not easy to find a solution without any false move. It does not make any sense to play the solutions without studying each move, or even worse to play the endgame automatically. Each move deserves to be studied, both the White moves as well as the Black ones.

When you study this endgame you will see that 9. 29-23 is false. The right reply is 35-8 =, but 35-13 is false as well, so that White is able to win again. See the second Blog endgame. The complete solution will be published later.

The World Championship Endgame Composition PWCE III

At the moment that I write this Blog article the endgame composers have sent their participating compositions to the contact person responsible for presenting the compositions to the jury. The jury consists of endgame experts from several countries.
This article does not show one of the participating compositions of course, but an endgame that is only an example of a sophisticated endgame in order to understand how these endgames are presented.

The composition shown below is one without any King at the initial position.

[White ""] [Black ""] [Event ""] [FEN "W:W28,38,40,50:B1,2,5,30"] 1. 28-23 5-10 2. 23-19 2-8 3. 50-44 1-7 4. 44-39 30-35 5. 40-34 10-15 6. 19-14 8-13 7. 39-33 7-12 8. 33-29 13-19 9. 14x23 15-20 10. 23-19 20-25 11. 19-14 25-30 12. 34x25 35-40 13. 14-10 40-44 14. 10-5 44-50 15. 29-24 50-22 16. 24-20 22-27 17. 38-33 27-22 18. 33-29 22-18 19. 5-23 18-13 20. 23x1 13-24 21. 29-23 24x15 22. 25-20 15x18 23. 1x29 *

A second variant started with a similar variant, but has a fully different solution.

[White ""] [Black ""] [FEN "W:W28,38,40,50:B1,2,5,30"] 1. 28-23 2-8 2. 23-19 5-10 3. 50-44 1-7 4. 44-39 30-35 5. 40-34 7-12 6. 39-33 10-15 7. 19-14 8-13 8. 33-29 13-19 9. 14x23 15-20 10. 23-19 12-18 11. 38-33 18-22 12. 19-13 22-27 13. 13-9 27-31 14. 9-4 31-37 15. 34-30 35x24 16. 33-28 24x22 17. 4x15 *

At both variants all the moves of White are the only winning moves. The endgame is fully thematic.
Black plays in such a way that White has only one way to win.

It is also interesting that when White makes any mistake, Black can force a draw, but only when Black always takes the only right move.

See the next variant. Zie de volgende variant.

[White ""] [Black ""] [Event ""] [FEN "W:W28,38,40,50:B1,2,5,30"] 1. 28-23 2-8 2. 23-19 5-10 3. 38-33 10-15 4. 19-14 8-13 5. 33-28 1-7 6. 50-44 7-12 7. 28-23 12-17 8. 23-18 13x22 9. 14-9 17-21 10. 9-3 21-26 11. 3-9 22-28 12. 9-14 28-33 13. 14-25 30-35 14. 25-39 33-38 =. *

The third winning variant starts after 5.40-34 10-15. De derde variant begint na 5. 40-34 10-15.
[White ""] [Black ""] [Event ""] [FEN "W:W19,38,39,40:B7,8,10,35"] 1. 40-34 10-15 2. 19-14 8-13 3. 39-33 13-19 4. 14x23 15-20 5. 23-19 20-25 6. 19-14 25-30 7. 34x25 35-40 8. 14-10 40-44 9. 10-5 44-50 10. 38-32 50x46 11. 25-20 7-11 12. 20-14 46x10 13. 5x6 *

These examples of fully thematic variants, winning or false, show what the endgame experts have to take into account to reach the high level of composition required to compete at the World Championship PWCE III. We hope that the PWCE III will be a success with a large number of marvellous compositions

One initial position at this Blog, but with a lot of surprises.

We start with how to win the from the initial position. White has one Man more.

[White ""] [Black ""] [FEN "W:W18,24,27,38,47,49:B8,9,16,28,37"] 1. 24-19 28-32 2. 18-13 9x18 3. 19-14 32x43 4. 49x38 37-42 5. 14-9 42x33 6. 9-3 8-13 7. 3-25 33-38 8. 25-48 13-19 9. 48-42 38-43 10. 42-48 *

A simple way to win, however Black has a big surprise with 4. (18-22!!).

[White ""] [Black ""] [FEN "W:W18,24,27,38,47,49:B8,9,16,28,37"] 1. 24-19 28-32 2. 18-13 9x18 3. 19-14 32x43 4. 49x38 18-22 5. 27x18 37-42 6. 14-9 42x33 7. 9-3 8-13 8. 18x9 33-39 *

So White has to find another way to win.

[White ""] [Black ""] [FEN "W:W18,24,27,38,47,49:B8,9,16,28,37"] 1. 24-19 28-32 2. 19-13 8x19 3. 18-12 32x43 4. 49x38 37-42 5. 12-8 42x33 6. 8-3 9-13 7. 3-25 33-38 8. 27-22 19-24 9. 22-17 24-29 10. 17-12 13-18 11. 12x34 38-43 *

This is the prove that White cannot win with playing 1. 24-19. The way to win starts with a brilliant sacrifice! Black has to respond with also a sacrifice, because otherwise Black goes too fast to promotion.

[White ""] [Black ""] [FEN "W:W18,24,27,38,47,49:B8,9,16,28,37"] 1. 27-22 28x17 2. 24-19 17-22 3. 18x27 37-42 4. 27-22 42x33 *

From here we go to the four final thematic variants. The first two lead to a classic catch position.

[White ""] [Black ""] [FEN "W:W19,22,47,49:B8,9,16,33"] 1. 22-18 33-38 2. 19-13 8x19 3. 18-12 16-21 4. 12-8 19-23 5. 8-2 21-26 6. 2-16 38-42 7. 47x38 26-31 8. 16-32 31-37 9. 32x3 37-41 10. 3-26 41-47 11. 26-42 47-36 12. 42-31 36x43 13. 49x38 *

The next one needs one more move. De volgende heeft een zet meer nodig.

[White ""] [Black ""] [FEN "W:W19,22,47,49:B8,9,16,33"] 1. 22-18 16-21 2. 18-13 9x18 3. 19-14 21-27 4. 14-10 33-38 5. 10-5 27-31 6. 5-10 31-36 7. 10-15 38-42 8. 47x38 8-13 9. 15-10 13-19 10. 10x12 36-41 11. 12-26 41-47 12. 26-42 47-36 13. 42-31 36x43 14. 49x38 *

To conclude two variants with a more unusual finish. The sacrifice of the White King at the end is a nice climax.

[White ""] [Black ""] [FEN "W:W19,22,47,49:B8,9,16,33"] 1. 22-18 16-21 2. 18-13 9x18 3. 19-14 21-27 4. 14-10 18-23 5. 10-4 27-32 6. 4-10 23-28 7. 10-15 32-38 8. 15-10 28-32 9. 10x37 33-39 10. 37-48 38-43 11. 49x38 39-44 12. 48-39 44x42 13. 47x38 8-13 14. 38-33 13-18 15. 33-28 *

The final variant is shown as part of the complete composition.

[White ""] [Black ""] [FEN "W:W18,24,27,38,47,49:B8,9,16,28,37"] 1. 27-22 28x17 2. 24-19 17-22 3. 18x27 37-42 4. 27-22 42x33 5. 22-18 33-38 6. 19-13 8x19 7. 18-12 19-23 8. 12-7 16-21 9. 7-2 21-27 10. 2-16 27-32 11. 16-7 23-28 12. 7-11 28-33 13. 11x39 32-37 14. 39-48 38-42 15. 47x38 37-41 16. 48-37 41x43 17. 49x38 9-14 18. 38-33 14-20 19. 33-29 20-25 20. 29-24 25-30 21. 24x35 *

Twenty-one moves! Éen en twintig zetten!

woensdag 12 juni 2019

Introductions followed by 4 x 4 endgames. Introducties gevolgd door 4 x 4 eindspelen.

This article contains a number of miniatures resulting at outstanding 4 x 4 endgames, with thematic variants and surprising false solutions. The readers will be familiar with it. Every move of White is the only way to win or when it is a false solution all the Black moves are the only ones to reach a draw.

However, the first one of this article does not have such a false solution. Enough to know that 24-20 does not win. The composition has two thematic variants.

[White ""] [Black ""] [FEN "W:W23,24,27,28,32,37:B1,2,10,12,13,17"] 1. 24-19 13x24 2. 23-18 12x23 3. 28x30 1-7 4. 32-28 10-14 5. 30-24 2-8 6. 27-22 14-20 7. 22x13 20x29 8. 13-8 29-34 9. 8-2 34-39 10. 2-30 39-44 11. 30-39 44x22 12. 37-32 *

The other variant is much longer and totally different. De andere variant is veel langer en heel anders.

Computer Draughts Tournament 2019

At Amersfoort The Netherlands a computer tounament was organized at May 19 2019, both for chess as for draughts. The idea for this combination came from Jan Krabbenbos, who also contributed to the organization of this event. This article is restricted to draughts. As usual Leo Nagels organized this computer draughts event. Unfortunately I could not be present and not be the referee because I was in Thailand at that time. My only contribution was the preparation of the playing schedule. A computer draughts tournament not only needs a scheme of who plays at every round, but also who has to move to another place with his computer, etc. and who can stay. Leo and I discussed it and we agreed about the schedule for the 56 games! This article shows a number of games including all the computer programs present, each with at least one winning game! This article shows a number of games including all the computer programs present, each with at least one winning game! Human players very often miss a winning opportunity halfway at the game, but even more at the endgame phase! The first Applet starts with 49-44? The first variant is,de eerste variant is: 49-44 (21-27) 32 x 21 (17 x 26) 39-34 (14-20) 25 x 5 (3-8) 5 x 23 (18 x 49) 50-44 (49 x 40) 35 x 44 (12-18). This is a draw probably. Dit is waarschijnlijk remise. That is why Black plays 3. (12-17!!). Daarom speelt zwart 3.(12-17!!) The Applet gives the right winning variant. The killing move is 22. (15-20!!). (15-20!!). GWD- Moby Dam
